The 11th arrondissement takes its name from the infamous prison that once defined this part of 18th century Paris.
Nothing of that prison remains after the Revolution of 1789. The Colonne de Juillet that stands in the middle of the Place de la Bastille commemorates the victims of two other uprisings - those of 1830 and 1848!
The area hosts a very large open air market in the Boulevard Richard Lenoir every Thursday and Sunday.
