The Pont des Arts in Paris became a popular venue for couples to declare their love by attaching a padlock to the steel mesh sides of the bridge and then throwing the keys in the Seine. This ritual became so popular that periodically municipal workers had to remove up to a million locks from the bridge, fearing that the weight of the locks could cause structural damage.
The steel mesh has now been replaced with glass panels ... I guess couples visiting Paris will have to find other ways of declaring their love.
