The Palais Garnier was opened in 1875 after taking 14 years to complete. It was originally called Le Salle des Capucines because of its address on the Boulevard des Capucines, but the name soon changed as Parisians demonstrated their appreciation and recognition the work of its architect, Charles Garnier. Three architectural styles can be identified: Baroque Revival, Beaux-Arts and Second Empire. It has been described as "probably the most famous opera house in the world".
The photograph was taken in the auditorium and shows two trumpet blowing angels putting the finishing touches to the ornate pillows, one with her palette and paint brushes and the other brandishing a hammer.
