The Louvre must feature on every tourist's list of "Places to visit when in Paris". Originally constructed as a fortress in 1190 by King Philippe-Auguste as defence against Viking raiders, it has been substantially renovated by successive kings. The present Renaissance-style edifice was commissioned by Francois I in the 16th century.
The latest addition is the glass pyramid in the main courtyard which serves as the main entrance to the museum. It was designed by the Chinese-born American architect, I. M. Pei and opened in 1989.
The Louvre is the most visited tourist attraction in Paris with 9,7 million people going through the museum in 2012! At any given time, more than 35,000 art works are on display and looked after by approximately 2,000 employees.
Don't try to see everything in one day!
