THE GENIUS OF LIBERTY

The golden statue of the "genius of liberty" at the top of the Colonne de Juillet in the centre of the Place de la Bastille is a memorial to those who died in the streets of Paris during the anti-monarchy uprising of July 1830.
These are the same battles depicted in Victor Hugo's epic novel, Les Miserables which was popularized in the musical and later award-winning movie with the same title.

The statue by Augustin Dumont shows liberty or freedom flying unfettered by the chains of oppression.
