The most striking bridge across the Seine is undoubtedly the Pont Alexandre which is named after Tsar Alexandre III who laid the foundation stone for the bridge in October 1896. The magnificent Art Nouveau lamps, the plump cherubs and burnished winged horses make it a favourite with all who visit Paris.
From an engineering perspective its single arched steel span some 6 metres above the water demonstrates the level of skill acquired by French engineers in the 19th century.
