The 12th century Chateau de Beynac is situated on a rocky outcrop 200 metres above the Dordogne River. From its ramparts the French soldiers could keep a watchful eye on the English army occupying the equally strongly fortified Chateau Castelnaud across the river.
Chateau de Beynac although appearing impregnable was conquered by Richard the Lionheart who led his men up the cliff and surprised the French. His occupation of Beynac did not last long as he died shortly afterwards from wounds sustained during an attack on the Chateau Chalus.
