The entrance to the Chateau de Beynac is protected by this port cullis (in French, une porte coulissante, a sliding gate) which would certainly have been effective in keeping the enemy at bay. Other protection was provided by palisades of sharpened posts on the chateau walls and metal gates from behind which the garrison could defend the position when attacked.
