The Marais is one of the most fascinating areas of France - from being the place of royal residence in the 17th century, it was abandoned after the Revolution and deteriorated dramatically until the De Gaulle government declared the area a historical monument in 1962.
It is now a popular and fashionable area where one finds restaurants, boutiques and galleries.
