PARIS CHURCHES - SAINTE-CHAPELLE

The spire of Sainte-Chapelle reaches into the evening sky above the Ile de la Cite.

This 75m tower was erected in 1853 - the fourth to be constructed after previous towers were destroyed by fire.

The original chapel was built in the 13th century by Louis IX and was considered one of the greatest architectural masterpieces of the Western world in the Middle Ages - so beautiful, in fact, that it was described by the devout as "a gateway to heaven"!
