LES VINS DE CONSTANCE

The Groot Constantia vineyards date back to the late 17th century when farms in this area on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain were allocated to so-called Vrij Burghers by the Dutch East India Company.  The wine produced then was not of a high quality as it was matured (or should I say, cured) in barrels that had previously been used to store heavily salted meat onboard the ships sailing from Europe to the East Indies via the Cape of Good Hope.
