LE ZOUAVE



The recent floods in France have resulted in the Seine rising to a level last seen in 1981. The statue of the Zouave on the Pont de L'Alma is traditionally used by Parisians as a measure of the height of the flooding river. Usually it is only his feet that get wet, but here the water is almost half way up the 5,2 metre tall statue!

The statue commemorates the soldiers of the French African regiment (Les Zouaves) who fought in the Crimean War. 

I took the photo below in the summer of 2010 when the Seine was at its "normal" level!
