These records of historic flood levels are chiselled into the stone walls of a house in La Roque Gageac on the Dordogne. When the winter snow of the Auvergne begins to melt in February or March the river level can rise dramatically resulting in the flooding of the towns established on its banks. The level of the 1866 flood would have covered the lower floors of the quayside houses shown below!
