FIRST SNOWFALL

A light dusting of snow on Mont Granier signals the start of winter in the French Alps. Mont Granier (1 933 metres) lies on the border between Savoie and Isere near the tiny hamlet of Entremont-le-Vieux.

A massive landslide in 1248 created the 700 metre sheer north face of the mountain. Five villages were completely destroyed by the landslide and more than a thousand people lost their lives.
