ARÉNE DE LUTÈCE

It is lunch time and students from the local university enjoy their lunch break on the terraces of the Arene de Lutece, an ancient Roman arena dating back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries. After its destruction by the Barbarians and the removal of much of the stone work for use elsewhere, it was gradually buried. It was uncovered in 1869 during the construction of the Rue Monge and was eventually restored to a state resembling the original.

Are these students waiting for the show to begin - another gruesome duel between gladiators and wild beasts?
