A TUNNEL TO NOWHERE

When travelling along the R58 between Barkly East and Lady Grey an observant traveller may notice the opening of a tunnel in the side of a valley about 300 metres above the river bed. This rail tunnel was built in 1911 with the intention of constructing a suspension bridge to  carry the railway line across the valley. This project was abandoned, but the tunnel remains complete with dressed stone entrances ... a monument to poor planning and fruitless expenditure.
