Butterflies are studied as valuable indicators of environmental changes. Their very short lifespans result in them reacting very quickly in successive generations to climatic changes and the increasing presence of pollutants in the environment.
So next time you see butterflies fluttering by, spare a thought for the contribution they may be making to our efforts to monitor what is happening to our fragile environment.
