The residents of the riverside town of La Roque Gageac have learnt that it is prudent to build high above the Dordogne which over the years has inundated the low lying buildings with disastrous results. The flood levels have been carved into the sandstone of the buildings with the flood of 1866 reaching more than 2 metres above street level.
