VILLEFRANCHE-DE-ROUERGUE

Villefranche-de-Rouergue was established as a fortified town (a bastide) in 1252 by Alphonse de Poitiers, the Count of Toulouse. The narrow streets laid out in a grid formation are typical of French bastides, but after negotiating these alleyways one is rewarded with the spectacular view of the imposing bell tower of the Collegiate Church of Notre Dame, completed in the 15th century.
