CHATEAU DE SAINT-MARTIN LAGUEPIE

As one crosses the Aveyron into the town of Laguepie, the chateau mentioned in yesterday's post, can be seen overlooking the river.

The history of the chateau reminds one that this part of France has not always been as peaceful as it is now. the area has been ravaged by wars and revolutions for centuries as indicated below:

1175 - the chateau was built
1212 - it was razed by Comte Simon de Montfort
1242 - it was rebuilt by Raymond VII, the Comte de Toulouse
1362 to 1369 - it was held by English forces during the Hundred Years War
1380 to 1389 - it was retaken and held by the English
1592 - it was razed by the Duc de Joyeuse
1793 - it was pillaged and destroyed during the French Revolution
... and has continued to deteriorate since then!
