PORTE CAILHAU, BORDEAUX




Porte-Cailhau was built in 1495 to commemorate the victory of Charles VIII in the Battle of Fornoue in Italy. This imposing medieval gateway was, for a period, the main entrance to the city of Bordeaux. Remnants of the city wall can be seen on the right side of the tower.

The sketch below from an early 20th century publication shows that not much has changed in the past 80 years or so!
