THE VILLAGE FOUNTAIN

Almost every village in France has a fountain built originally to provide water to inhabitants, visitors and horses. These fountains were usually fed by gravity from a source (a spring) in the mountains above the village. Today they are more decorative than utilitarian - a reminder of the past.

The fountain above and its decorative taps is in the village
of Saint Pierre de Chartreuse in Isere.
