Muizenberg Beach on Tweede Nuwejaars Dag (2 January 2016) - thousands enjoying a swim in the slightly warmer water of False Bay.
False Bay is notorious for the number of Great White Sharks that prey on the seals in the bay, but the swimmers and surfers seem unperturbed.
These photographs were taken from the "shark watcher's hut" high up the slope of the mountain on Boyes Drive. The "watcher" equipped with a pair of powerful binoculars and a two-way radio, watches for the fearsome sharks that can reach 5 metres in length. On sighting one (and this can occur two or three times per day) a quick call is made to the life-guards below and this will raise the alarm and the bathers and surfers will leave the water!
Is that a shark? No - false alarm ... it's just kelp! Relax ...
