We have often stopped at La Belle Alliance restaurant in Swellendam when travelling to Cape Town, not knowing the origin of its name.
Originally built as a Masonic Lodge, it was opened in 1924 and with the closure of the lodge, became a restaurant. Its name is derived from the small inn where Prince Blucher, the Prussian commander and the Duke of Wellington met signifying the end of the battle that had finally defeated the French Emperor, Napoleon. Blucher felt that the Belle Alliance could be extended to the coalition of Sweden, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Sardinia and a number of German states that had allied with England to fight the French.
He felt that the battle should be known as the La Belle Alliance, but Wellington preferred using the name of the small village north of the battlefield, Waterloo.
The interior of the restaurant is lit by a massive wine-bottle chandelier - the emptying of the bottles must have been a battle of a different sort!
