Le Musee du Louvre has been open to the public since 1793 and its collections have been added to continuously over the centuries. Thousands of tourists visit the museum daily, but to really examine what is on display would take weeks. The impressive glass pyramid which serves as an entrance while allowing natural light to enter the underground reception area and galleries was designed by I. M. Pei in the 1980s.
