The Pont des Arts has become another victim of the "Love Lock" craze.  In 2008 couples began attaching padlocks to the railings of the bridge and then as a token of their commitment to each other, they would toss the keys into the Seine below.  This touching romantic ritual could have potentially disastrous consequences for the bridge due to the weight of the padlocks.  In June 2014 a portion of the bridge collapsed and this prompted the municipal authorities to replace some of the railings with glass panels.

In the mean time the locks have provided tourists with yet another Parisian photo opportunity.
