The cartoon above was printed in "The Times" this morning and illustrates the sentiment being expressed by so many writers world-wide in response to the attack on the offices of the magazine, Charlie Hebdo.
The role played by satirists and cartoonists is not always understood or appreciated in the same way by people coming from different cultural backgrounds and traditions. However, their role is essential in a vibrant democracy where freedom of expression promotes, in fact ensures public debate, comment and assessment of the utterances and actions of those in positions of power.
