HOTEL DE LANGEAC

Fascinated by the account of Thomas Jefferson's sojourn in Paris, I decided to find out where he had lived.  The Internet provided the answer: The corner of Rue de Berri and the Champs Elysee!

While he held the office of American Minister to the Court of Versailles, he hired the Hotel de Langeac from its owner, Comte Auguste Louis de Lespinasse Langeac.

A trip to the address (via Google Earth) revealed that the address is now shared by a branch of the department store, ZARA.  The original house was seized during the Revolution, sold in 1793 and demolished in 1842.

It was interesting to note that Hotel de Langeac was, in 1785, on the outskirts of Paris.  The Grille de Chaillot (a city gate) was situated on the Champs Elysee at this location.
