At the end of February 1969, the fruit and vegetable merchants were forced to leave their stalls in the Les Halles neighbourhood in the heart of Paris where they and their forefathers had plied their trade since the 12th century!
A new fresh produce market (reputed to be the largest in the world) had been established on the outskirts of Paris at Rungis so that the Les Halles area could be modernized.
This sculpture by Raymond Mason may be seen in the nearby St-Eustache church. The expressions on the faces of the merchants certainly shows their displeasure with the decision!
