KNYSNA TURACO (a.k.a. KNYSNA LOERIE)

Tuesday posts feature birds I have photographed in our garden and today the spotlight falls on the spectacular Knysna Turaco (also known as the Knysna Loerie).  It is a fairly shy forest dweller often seen only as a brilliant flash of its deep red wings as it glides from one tree to another.  Its habit of hopping from branch to branch led some early visitors to South Africa to believe that it was incapable of flying.  The Loerie which has such an elegant appearance has a surprisingly raucous call which has been captured in its Zulu name, i-Gwalagwal!

Although we have lived in our home on the sub-tropical east coast of South Africa for almost twenty years, a visit by the Knysna Loeries is still a thrilling experience.
