This photograph shows one of the three large rose windows of the Chartres Cathedral - it shows the south transept window which was added to the cathedral in 1221 to 1230.
The blue used in these windows became known as "Chartres Blue" which Violet-le-Duc said was the colour of the autumn sky. The method used to attain this deep blue was kept secret by the glass makers, but recent studies have shown that the addition of red stains to the lighter blue stain produced this unusually vivid blue.
