La Roque-Gageac is a small village situated on the northern bank of the Dordogne and is built precariously on the cliff above the river. Little has changed in the village in the past 300 years despite serious damage caused by rockfalls, the last occurring in 2007.
The village faces south and as the cliff protects the area from the cold winds coming from the north and west, the climate has been conducive to tropical plants flourishing in the area - note the palm to the right of the church!
Remnants of 15th century fortifications incorporating caves can be seen in the cliff above the church.
