THE XALANGA BRIDGE ACROSS THE TSOMO RIVER

This five-arched bridge over the Tsomo River in the Eastern Cape was designed by Joseph Newey and built by immigrant stonemasons using local sandstone.  It was completed in 1890 and was replaced in 2008 by the two-lane concrete structure visible in the background.  The old bridge now serves as a pedestrian crossing.

OJ - completing a series of five blog-posts of bridges, hopefully reminding us that it's better to build bridges than walls
