HOW DO THE BIRDS KNOW?

The birds in our garden behaved frenetically the whole day - flying from tree to tree, rushing off and then returning almost immediately.  Chirping and calling to each other incessantly … and seemingly, insistently.

I know why as I have seen the weather report: A huge cold-front is approaching from the west - described by the overly dramatic TV weatherman as "the mother of all storms" and by his less histrionic colleague as "the most severe storm this winter"!

But how do the birds know that there's a storm approaching?  It is still more than 500 kilometres away.
