On this Good Friday, we pay a visit to the oldest church in Paris: Saint-Germain-des-Pres which dates back to 542! The church was an influential Benedictine abbey which resulted in it being targeted during the Revolution - 318 priests were hacked to death by the mob on 3 September 1792 and most of the buildings were later destroyed by fire in 1794. Although some of the original 11th century structure remains, most of what one sees today reflects the restoration done in the 19th century.
