St-Pierre de Montmartre is one of the oldest churches in Paris. It has been built on the ruins of the Benedictine Abbey established in 1133 by King Louis VI and his wife, Adelaide of Savoy. Four marble pillars are all that remain of the original Roman temple which first occupied the site.
The Gothic style windows shown above were added after World War II after a stray bomb destroyed the original windows. The church offers a quiet respite from the noise and busyness of the narrow crowded streets outside.
