The town of Cordes received its charter to become a bastide from the Count of Toulouse in 1222. The name Cordes is believed to be derived from "corte" an Indo-European word meaning "rocky heights".
By climbing to the top of these rocky heights, one could get thirsty and conveniently placed near the top is a wine merchant, ready to assist in relieving your temporary affliction. I found this basket of fine wines from near and far very tempting.
