LE GÂTEAU DE MARIAGE

The 9th arrondissement of Paris is often referred to simply as L'Opera as it includes the magnificent 19th century Opera Garnier. The ornate and opulent structure was opened in 1875 and was referred to as le gateau de mariage, the "wedding cake" by the Parisians.
It was referred to as "unquestionably a masterpiece of the first rank" among Paris buildings constructed during the Second Empire, but this view was not shared by all. Le Corbusier described the building as "lying art" and said, "the Garnier movement is a decor of the grave"!
Harsh words ... you are invited to have your own opinion.
