The predominantly blue colours of the strikingly ornate interior of the Albi Cathedral are in sharp contrast to its rather plain brick exterior. Construction of the cathedral began in 1282 with it initially being planned as a fortress. This occurred during the Albigensian (or Cathar) Crusade which had been launched against members of the Cathar movement. Pope Innocent III had decreed that adherents of the sect were heretics. It has been estimated that 200 000 to 1 000 000 Cathars lost their lives during the 20 year crusade.
