THE VENUS DE MILO
This statue of Aphrodite was discovered on the island of Meleos in 1820 by the Marquis de Rieviere. The statue became known as "the Venus of Milo" - (Milo being the modern Greek name for the island).
It is believed to date back to the period between the 3rd and 1st century B.C.
The Marquis donated the statue to King Louis XVIII who placed it in the Louvre.
The arms of the statue were never found and it has been suggested that as the statue was probably bedecked with jewellery, thieves may have broken the arms to get at the bracelets.
