The Kwa-Zulu Natal town of Howick has developed over the years around this spectacular waterfall on the Umgeni River. The almost vertical drop is 95 metres in height. The isi-Zulu name of the fall is KwaNogqaza - "place of the tall one" and according to local folklore a huge serpent (Inkanyamba) lives in the pool at the base of the fall.
A drift at the top of the fall was used by wagons and riders in earlier times which occasionally led to loss of life if the strength of the river current was under-estimated! Approximately 40 deaths have occurred at this locality through accidents, suicides and even murders!
