The Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is fairly common in the wooded areas of France although their numbers are dwindling due to competition for food and habitat as a result of the introduction of the Eastern grey squirrel from North America. In an effort to conserve the red squirrel efforts are being made to reduce the number of grey squirrels by trapping and shooting.
This photograph was taken in October in Troo on the banks of the Loir where this young squirrel was stocking his larder for the winter months that lay ahead.
