LES MAIRIES

While we await the results of the municipal elections held yesterday, I considered it appropriate to reflect on les mairies de France - the town halls of France.

There were 36,781 mairies in mainland France and its overseas territories in 2008 - some serving hamlets with 10 or more inhabitants. In fact just over 50% of communes controlled by a mairie, have fewer than 500 inhabitants.

Perhaps our South African municipalities are too large, resulting in the fierce political competition for their control ... small might be better!
