Originally designed as a church to honour Sainte-Genevieve, the Pantheon later (during the Revolution) became a location for the tombs of France's great men: Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Victor Hugo and Emile Zola. The remains of the Resistance leader, Jean Moulin were also laid to rest in the Pantheon after the Second World War.
The first person to be entombed here was the popular orator, Honore Mirabeau, but not for long ... Robespierre later demanded that his body be removed!
