POMPIERS ON PARADE

On our first visit to Paris we came across this group of pompiers on a parade ground in front of Saint-Eustache. They were apparently about to receive their new commanding officer as he took over from his predecessor.

The Paris Fire Brigade (Brigade des sapeurs-pompiers de Paris) is part of the French Army  and comprises 8 500 men and women making it the largest fire brigade in Europe and the third largest urban fire service in the world, after those of Tokyo and New York.

Their motto is "Sauver ou perir"  - Save or Perish!

The building in the background is the Bourse du Commerce - the old corn exchange built in the 18th century.
