KNOCK, KNOCK ... WHO'S THERE?

I have always been fascinated by the elaborately decorated doors of French homes. The beautiful woodwork, the intricate locks and hinges, but most of all, the knockers (les marteaux).

This is a well-preserved example, obviously hand-crafted and burnished by the many hands that have struck the door thousands of times through the centuries.
