The Tuileries Gardens were laid out in the 17th century by Andre le Notre who was also responsible for the design of the Palace of Versailles gardens. A copy of his elaborate plan appears below and the octagonal pond pictured above can clearly be seen.
Prior to the establishment of the garden the area was occupied by craftsmen, some of who made tiles from mud dredged from the Seine - hence the name: tuileries (the tile works).
