A VAST COUNTRY

I have just returned from a trip in the North East Cape which has reminded me that South Africa is a vast and intriguing country. Our focus was the remnants of infrastructural development - the roads, railways and bridges, constructed at the end of the 19th century. Many of the beautiful stone bridges are still standing. While some are still in daily use, others have been replaced by concrete structures.

This photograph was taken from the Satan's Nek Pass on the road between Ngcobo and Elliot. The name of the pass undoubtedly refers to the period when attempts
to negotiate the route in ox-wagons often met with disaster!
