A POLITICIAN TAKES HIS SEAT
The painting above hangs in the Musee Carnavalet and is a comment on the ostentatious behaviour of those seeking public office. They make sure that they arrive just before the show is due to start and the theatre is full. They ensure that they are seen and they acknowledge the delight which they imagine everyone has to be sharing the occasion with them. The artist has cleverly shown that the members of the audience are certainly not pleased with their appearance and lateness!
