THE KINGS OF JUDAH
Before the French Revolution statues of the Kings of Judah had adorned the facade of Notre-Dame Cathedral since the early 13th century. In 1789 the citizens of Paris mistook these for the Kings of France and beheaded them! Later in the 18th century the damaged statues were sold as rubble.
Miraculously, some of the heads were unearthed in 1977 during excavations for a new building in the 9th arrondissement and are now on display in the Cluny Museum.
Some look decidedly annoyed by the whole affair!
